Being stranded on a desert island is a scenario which many would find terrifying. However for some intrepid travellers this would be an irresistible challenge, putting your survival skills to the test. In our desert island competition we are offering the chance to win a Berghaus 65 litre backpack. All you need to do is create a blog post listing the ten items you would choose to take in your backpack on a stranded desert island.

The Island

In order to help you pick your ten items and imagine the scenario better, here is some more information on our fictional desert island:

  • The island is small, no more than a few square kilometres. It has pristine sandy beaches on two sides, a rocky coast on the other, and dense jungle in the middle.
  • Freshwater is in short supply on the island, however with regular afternoon tropical storms, if you can find a way to gather and store the rainwater, hydration shouldn’t be an issue until your rescue.
  • The island also has a healthy supply of coconut trees which can be found on the edge of the beach leading to the jungle interior, providing some food. However, apart from coconut and a few yams, easily accessible food is hard to come by.
  • The biggest source of food available while stranded on the island is in the sea. In the crystal clear waters off the island, fish is in abundance and on the rocky side there is some good crab-hunting grounds.
  • For anyone with iron stomachs there is an abundance of insects and reptiles in the jungle heart of the island, but be warned the jungle is a hazardous place if you’re not prepared.
  • The jungle is an excellent resource for building materials, with a healthy supply of bamboo, rattan and fire wood, so with the right tools you have the potential to create shelter.

When thinking about your ten items remember the following!

"A man can live three weeks without food, three days without water, and three minutes without air, but he cannot live three seconds without hope”.

American sociologist Lewis Mumford wrote in The Conduct of Life (1951)

Having a base camp on the desert island, capable of sustaining you for a couple of months will be key. You may be stranded but help is on the way, so staying alive for as long as possible is essential.

Remember, you only have ten items with you and they must fit into a 65 litre backpack, so choose wisely. These items will determine whether you will survive long enough to be rescued…and whether or not you will win the prize!
