Flying To Africa From The UK

Here are a few things you should know about flying from the UK to Africa, including flight time and entry requirements.

Flight Times

Considering how large the continent of Africa is, it comes as no surprise that the flight times vary a lot.

London to Johannesburg will take you approximately eleven hours direct while travelling from London to Accra could take you six and a half hours.

Entry Requirements

Most African countries will require you to hold a visa in order to visit, but the rules for obtaining one tend to vary.

You can visit South Africa for up to 90 days without needing to obtain a visa if you hold a UK passport. Parents travelling with children should be aware that they will need to carry the child(ren)’s unabridged birth certificate which lists the child’s details and both parents’ details, and in cases where only one parent is travelling with the child, an affidavit from the other parent or a death certificate will be required.

Several other African countries allow travellers with UK passports to obtain a visa upon arrival, while others will need to be applied for in advance.

If you are planning to visit Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda in the same trip, you can obtain an East African Visa which covers all three countries.

We recommend that you check the gov.uk travel advice for the country you plan to visit before booking flights.
