San Francisco, also known as the Golden City, is of course, home to the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, and is also known for being a particularly progressive, liberal (and hilly!) city.

However, there’s loads more to see and do in this city by the bay, making it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the US.

Located on the San Francisco Peninsula, the city is considered the major cultural and financial hub of Northern California, with great nightlife and easy access to some spectacular surrounding scenery.

The Golden Gate Bridge is probably the most well-known landmark, and gives particularly spectacular views over the bay, especially when the fog creeps in!

Alcatraz Island is also popular and can be visited either by ferry or helicopter. Taking a cable car ride up the many hills of San Francisco is also a must, and a great way to ease the strain on your feet!

Fisherman’s Wharf is another popular area with tourists, full of restaurants, nightlife and shops, although it’s perhaps best known for Pier 39, which is home to a shopping centre and aquarium.

But the city is almost as well known for its cultural scene as it is for its landmarks, and you’ll find a host of laid-back eateries and bars, as well as major museums such as the Museum of Modern Art.

Unfortunately, there are currently no airlines offering direct flights from Manchester to San Francisco, although Virgin Atlantic are set to introduce a service in summer 2017.

Currently, an indirect flight from Manchester to San Francisco takes around 13 hours on average, which stopovers in cities such as Dublin (with Aer Lingus), Frankfurt (Lufthansa), Zurich (Swiss), London (British Airways) and New York (Delta).

Upon arrival at San Francisco International Airport (SFO), you can catch the BART train service to downtown San Francisco, which is about 13 miles north of the airport, or there’s also a taxi rank outside the terminal.

Also, bear in mind that you’ll have to fill out an online ESTA form 72 hours before departure to ensure that you qualify for the US Visa Waiver Programme.
