Flying to South America from the UK

Here’s everything you need to know when flying from the UK to Asia, including flight times and entry requirements.

Flight times

South America is the fourth largest continent in terms of area so it’s little wonder that flight times can vary dramatically depending on which country in the region you intend to visit.

It takes around twelve hours from the UK to São Paulo, Brazil, on a direct flight, while Chile is around 15 hours from the UK directly. However, flights with stopovers are more frequent to South America and can take up to 24 hours, with Ecuador, for example, only accessible by an indirect flight.

Direct flights are available to some parts of South America from a number of UK cities, such as London and Manchester, although some destinations require connecting flights.

Entry requirements

Due to South America consisting of multiple different countries, the entry requirements will vary throughout the continent.

The vast majority of countries in South America don’t require a visa if travelling on a UK passport and travelling for tourist purposes. You will be given 30 to 90 days of travel without a visa, depending on which country you visit.

However, you may be required to have proof of onward travel and must have a valid passport for at least the duration of your visit, if not for six months afterwards.

TheUK government website has extensive details of the entry requirements for each country so be sure to check these out before travelling.
