When flying from London to Atlanta, in under nine hours you can find yourself in the heart of the south-east of the US, in an international city which is a perfect combination of the old and the new south, and a gateway to the rest of the country.

Nowadays, Atlanta is one of the most important cities in the US, but during the Civil War in the 19th century, it was burned to the ground by Confederate forces.

However, the city rose from the ashes by 1870 and christened itself the ‘Capital of the New South’ and later, ‘the next Great International City’.

By 1996 it had cemented this reputation when it drew the eyes of the world with the 1996 Summer Olympic Games, which helped to revitalise many of the more deprived neighbourhoods of the city.

It’s a unique city in that much of the area is covered by a huge tree canopy, giving it a lovely natural feel compared to similar big cities.

This carries through to some of the city’s most popular tourist attractions such as the zoo, aquarium (the second largest in the world) and botanical gardens, which have a 40ft walkway right through the treetops.

If you’re interested in history, you should also check out the Centre for Civil and Human Rights, which highlights the important part the city played in the Civil Rights Movement, with lots of personal artefacts of Martin Luther King, who was born in the city.

Of course, Atlanta is also a popular destination for business travellers, as well as with those travelling on to other destinations within the US, as the Hartsfield-Jackson is one of the main transport hubs in the country, as well as being the busiest airport in the world.

In terms of weather, Atlanta is a warm city, with a moderate amount of rainfall. Temperatures are generally in the low thirties for summer and highs of about 13°C during winter.
