Autumn has well and truly arrived. The leaves are falling from the trees and Christmas is creeping closer. Yet if the idea of gloomy winter weather and plummeting temperatures is already getting you down, maybe it’s time to plan your next get away? The good news is that there are plenty of great holiday options to consider right now.

As well as frosty mornings and darker evenings, November brings with it all manner of travel gems to tempt. Thankfully, with the sun still shining elsewhere in the world, you’ll find accommodation rates reasonable and flights affordable, so you’d be mad not to check them out.

Thailand

While friends and family are shivering back in the UK, you can explore the delights of The Grand Palace in the Old City, take a boat trip to discover the floating market, or stock up on just about anything you can think of at the city’s gargantuan Chatuchak Market. Budget hotels in Bangkok start from as little as 1000 baht, if your budget is tight. When you’ve had enough of the hustle and bustle of this super fast paced city, you can hop on an internal flight to one of Thailand’s breathtakingly beautiful islands and indulge in some blissful beach therapy.

Sicily

Flights in November start at around £75 and if you do your research properly, you should be able to find a decent B&B from around 60 Euros per night. Temperatures peak at around 17 degrees, so you’ll need bring a sweater and pack your jacket but rest assured, there’ll be no jostling crowds at the islands many cultural attractions. Fly to Palermo and while away some well-earned hours exploring its exquisite selection of weathered Baroque churches and palazzos. Foodies will find the city pleasantly peppered with a surfeit of fabulous bars and restaurants.

Sri Lanka

The sunny high season on the Indian Ocean island of Sri Lanka runs from December to March, making mid November the perfect time to travel there if you’re in need of some winter warmth. Visitors at this time do run the risk of getting caught in the odd rain shower but they rarely last for long this time of year. Once you’ve unpacked, get straight out to explore the spectacular beaches and rugged rainforest, teeming with wildlife. And don’t forget to drop by the 5th Century citadel of Sigiriya, with its grand palace and intricate frescos. We found flights for around the £400 mark and if luxury isn’t top of your list, you can end up paying as little at £10 per night for a (very) basic beach hut.

Madeira

Whether you’re a culture vulture or the sporty sort, this friendly, welcoming island has everything. While you’re there, be sure to spend a day in the capital, Funchal, with its impressive architecture, colourful market and enchanting street art on the Rua de Santa Maria.

But while the thermometer might drop a couple of degrees to around 21 in November, you’re still pretty much guaranteed sunshine. It’s very possible to find a place to stay for under £50 a night and an early November flight should only set you back around £160. This volcanic island is very popular with windsurfers and particularly famous for its stunning beaches. El Cotillo beach is widely regarded as the most picturesque and is especially impressive at sunset. You won’t want to leave without experiencing the desolate beauty of the sand dunes at Corralejo either.

Nice

This stylish Riviera resort is a prefect place to escape to when winter arrives in the UK - those in the know have been heading there for years. Apart from great low cost flight deals (from around £130 return), expect mild temperatures and some truly beautiful blue skies (a very pleasant 16 degrees is about the average temperature in Nice November time). There’s a dazzling sea front to wander leisurely along, with plenty of reasonably priced bars and eateries to refuel at along the way. Shopaholics should head to the Avenue Jean Medecin - the Oxford Street of Nice - and art lovers should be very satisfied with the healthy mix of old and new on show. Highlights include the Musee d’Art Moderne et d’Art Contemporain and the Musee Matissse is not to be missed.

Istanbul

Most seasoned travelers will agree that the best time to visit this ancient and very unique city is between September and November, when the crowds are smaller, the rates lower and the weather spectacular. Flights start at around the £160 mark this time of year and you should find yourself spoilt for choice when it comes to decent budget accommodation, provided you do some research pre-departure. Eating can be as cheap as you need it to be and the local cuisine more often than not delicious. Head to the street food stalls for a traditional Turkish kebab or go haute cuisine at one of the city’s acclaimed restaurants (Han Terrace gets a universal thumbs up on Trip Advisor). After lunch head to the Grand Bazaar for some retail therapy and don’t forget to drop by the Tokapi Palace, which was once the hub of the Ottoman Empire.
