The river itself draws large numbers of animals to it including; rhino, buffalo, lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffe, zebra, ostrich, oryx and elephant to name a few. Samburu is also a top spot for bird watching with over 350 species frequenting the area.

The Ewaso Nyiro River is also an important source of water for the villagers in Samburu. The cultural and ancestral practices of the Samburu tribes are not too dissimilar from the Maasi. The region offers a great place to learn about all the traditions and practices of the locals here.

Lake Nakuru National Park

Located in Central Kenya around 155kms from Nairobi, Lake Nakuru can be visited in a day and is commonly combined with the Maasai Mara National Reserve or Samburu listed above. The main attraction to the park is the lake lying beneath the cliffs of the Rift Valley. Outstanding views of the migrating flamingos, all 2 million of them, can be viewed at certain periods of the year, due to the alkaline and algae that the lake conjures up.

This mass of wildlife concentrated in one area is one of the most moving and unique natural spectacles to be seen on the planet. This is not the only wildlife to be spotted within the park. Black and white rhino can often be spotted as well Rothchild’s giraffes, waterbuck, zebras, buffalo and some of the big cats, including lions, cheetahs and leopards.

The landscape is also well worth taking in with cliffs, the lake itself and waterfalls and forests adorning this Kenyan game reserve.
